Situated in Toronto's Upper Beaches, we renovated a dark, closed-off home for a young family, opening it into one shaped around light and flow. A full two-storey rear addition re-established the home's relationship to the backyard, while the kitchen and living spaces became a single, connected sequence.
The new primary suite occupies the addition's second storey — a bedroom set among the surrounding tree canopy with the quiet feel of a treehouse, and an ensuite with a calmer, spa-like restraint. Bridging old and new, the original staircase treads remain in place, washed in daylight from new skylights above as they lead into the addition.
Narrow by footprint, the home now feels considerably larger, its rooms unfolding into one another with a sense of space that belies its original scale.
